India’s Tallest 260m Viewing Tower to Come Up in Thane

Thane district is reportedly set to witness a major transformation with the announcement of a series of large-scale urban, cultural and recreational projects, alongside the construction of India’s tallest viewing tower. Planned along Thane creek, the landmark structure will reportedly rise to a height of 260m, positioning it among the tallest observation towers in the country. While drawing comparisons and highlighting the ambitious scale of the proposed development, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a statement stated that the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris stands at 300m. Here is a detailed report on SURFACES REPORTER (SR).

The announcement was made in Mumbai following a detailed presentation by Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao and senior officials, who outlined multiple infrastructure and tourism-driven initiatives planned across Thane district, including parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Among the key projects is a convention centre at Kasarvadavali, aimed at boosting business tourism and large-scale events, along with a 25 acre town park at Kolshet, designed to provide open green spaces for residents. Both developments will be reportedly executed under the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) model.

In addition to these, Thane is also set to receive a wide range of themed attractions and public amenities. Plans include a Koli Museum celebrating the region’s indigenous fishing community, a large aquarium, a science centre, and an international-standard snow park. Recreational infrastructure will be further expanded through an amusement park, adventure park and a bird museum spread across 12.5 acres. Cultural and entertainment facilities will include a 25-acre musical concert centre, while sports infrastructure will be strengthened with a state-of-the-art sports complex spanning 50 acres.

Further enhancing the city’s green network, the Anandvan Green Belt, extending over 18.4km, will be developed by the Thane Municipal Corporation. This green corridor will run adjacent to Sanjay Gandhi National Park, near the boundary of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, reinforcing ecological connectivity and public access to nature. Reportedly, according to the Deputy Chief Minister, the tendering process for most of these projects is already underway, and all developments will be implemented on a BOT basis, ensuring private sector participation while maintaining long-term public benefit.
