In Memoriam: Remembering Architect and Interior Designer Conrad Gonsalves | SURFACES REPORTER

Remembering architect and interior designer Conrad Gonsalves and his enduring contribution to Indian architecture and sustainable design - SURFACES REPORTER (SR)

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that Surfaces Reporter announces the passing of esteemed architect and interior designer Conrad Gonsalves, who breathed his last on June 3, 2026. A stalwart of the Indian design industry, Conrad’s visionary work, unwavering dedication to sustainable design, and generous mentorship have left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape of India.

Born and raised in the vibrant cultural hub of Bandra, Mumbai, he was exposed to both the sciences and the humanities while receiving training under the Bombay Jesuits. After beginning his studies in Architecture, he earned a Diploma in Interior Design from the State Board of Technical Education. This multidisciplinary foundation in science, humanities, and design laid the groundwork for a prolific career spanning more than five decades.

As the Founder and Principal of Conrad Gonsalves & Associates, he championed a holistic and deeply thoughtful approach to spatial design. Over the course of his remarkable career, his firm delivered a diverse portfolio of landmark projects spanning corporate offices, commercial spaces, and bespoke residences. Notably, his 1996 design for Coca-Cola’s state-of-the-art open office in Bombay set a new benchmark, seamlessly blending modern functionality with international corporate standards right here in India.

Beyond his built works, Conrad’s legacy is equally etched in the minds of the next generation of designers. As a dedicated guest lecturer at the VES College of Architecture and the Director of DLLD (Design-Learning-Living-Direction), he was a generous mentor who believed in nurturing young talent. His insightful, forward-thinking contributions at prestigious industry platforms - including the Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID) Golden Jubilee will be greatly missed by his peers and admirers.

Conrad Gonsalves was not just an architect; he was a visionary who shaped the spatial narrative of Mumbai and beyond. He approached every project not merely as a structure to be built, but as an environment to be experienced and respected.

SURFACES REPORTER (SR) extends its deepest, most heartfelt condolences to his family, his longtime partner Meredith, his dedicated colleagues at Conrad Gonsalves & Associates, and the entire architectural and interior design community. While we mourn the loss of a true industry pioneer, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived. His designs, his wisdom, and his unwavering passion for sustainable, human-centric living will continue to inspire us all for generations to come.
