A Fusion Of Brick, Wood, And Natural Light | Hnp Architects

The exterior of the residence in Tiruchirappalli embodies a thoughtful and functional design approach, maximizing the potential of its 12’ x 22’ plot located in a busy, wall to-wall neighborhood. It features a striking brick jaali wall on the first floor, with diagonally arranged bricks that provide both privacy and dramatic aesthetics while overlooking the street. The facade showcases raw materials, including exposed brick walls, lime-plastered interior surfaces, and reclaimed wood for door and window frames, enhancing the building’s tactile quality. Terrazzo and cement oxide flooring contribute to the rustic charm.

To minimize reliance on artificial lighting, the design incorporates wall slits, clerestories, and skylights, ensuring ample natural light and cross-ventilation. The arrangement of the bricks on the north facade is tilted towards the west, reflecting cultural values and acknowledging a nearby mosque. Additionally, a thinnai seater next to the road invites interaction with street life, fostering a connection between the interior and the vibrant exterior environment.
