The onset of COVID-19 has made us aware about a major issue that was vastly invisible from our social behaviour, i.e., public hygiene. While we tend to maintain and clean our houses well, our civic sense has not been much improved that led to dirtly lanes and cities. Waste management is one of the major issues in every city and the problem onsets since the very begining due to our ignorance towards waste management. However, still there are some cities that have actually performed exceptionally well and being termed as the cleanest cities. Every year since last five years, the Govt of India is conducting Swachh Survekshan that ranks the cities, towns and states based on sanitation, waste management and overall cleanliness.
The quaint city of Indore is hailed as the 'Cleanest city of the country' for the fourth time in a row. The city has made a concentrated efforts in terms of every aspect of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Drive) and has already attained Open Defecation Free Plus Plus (ODF ++) status which signifies complete sanitation in terms of solid waste management, sewerage treatmentand road infrastructure. The city also segregates 100 percent of its waste at source.
Also known as the City of Diamonds, Surat in Gujarat has been ranked second in the cleanliness index. The city has already been awarded as the Best city in the Solid Waste Management in the Swachh Sarvekshan 2019 but couldnt bag a spot in the Top ten cleanest city of the country. However, this year, it jumped the spots and grabbed the second position.
Navi Mumbai scored a whooping third spot in the overall ranking of Swachh Sarvekshan 2020 from last year's seventh rank. It has received the ODF (open defecationfree) double-plus status and ranked as the cleanlest citiy in Maharashtra.
The only south Indian city to rank in the Top Five, Andhra Pradesh's Vijaywada has been ranked fourth in the Swachch Sarvekshan 2020. It jumped from its 12th ranking in 2019.
The Fifth rank in the notable index has gone to Ahmedabad, another city of Gujarat. This ranking is specifically important as it is the only metro city in the country that has been able to bag the spot in the Swachh sarvekshan ranking.
