Realty developers have requested Indian Railways to help provide necessary logistical support for the return of the migrant workers. Even though, at present the workers are returning slowly to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the number needs to improve to resume complete construction work
Developers body, CREDAI MCHI has especially urged Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal, and Maharashtra government to help facilitate affordable and convenient railway transportation for workers.
As the workers belong to faraway parts of the region, such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, additional transport facilities will surely improve the inflow.
In the backdrop of Covid19 pandemic, migrant workers had rushed back to their hometowns amid lockdown. However, after the partial lifting of lowdown across various states, they had started returning on their own. Some are also returning due to various incentives offered by developers as well.
While the workers’ numbers have increased across states, Mumbai being a Covid19 hotspot has witnessed a relatively lower turnout.
Keeping the pandemic in mind, developers are deploying safety measures at their construction sites to ensure the adherence of all government specified protocols. In order to complete the work however, it is important to increase the number of workers.
