Fuse Lighting has been a handcrafting bespoke lighting brand in Los Angeles since 2000, selling exclusively to designers and architects. The brand has a worldwide customer base with 12 showrooms across the US. Surfaces Reporter (SR) took a closer look at Fuse Lighting on a tête-à-tête with Kevin Kolanowski, CEO of Fuse Lighting.

Before Kevin Kolanowski started Fuse Lighting in 2000, there was no middle ground between traditional and modern lighting. He saw the opportunity and dreamed of marrying the two—traditional and modern lighting. Driven by the desire, he spent years studying the interaction of light and texture with unusual materials. He created his signature style with amazing lights that shine into corners we don’t always explore in detail.
Today, Fuse Lighting is a luxury lighting company that’s equal parts a solution to an under-served space – and an excuse to let loose with myriad materials and dynamic design. Their fixtures really are something. As 2020 marks their 20 year anniversary making custom lighting, Fuse Lighting introduced 20 new pieces in honor of that milestone.

Kevin creates amazing works of light that continue to surprise and delight both himself and his clients. The company takes pride in the authenticity and details of every piece.
Their collections are meticulously designed and handcrafted by highly specialized artisans that we’ve built invaluable relationships with over many years. Fuse Lighting’s vision and renowned custom capabilities are virtually limitless. The company also spread their hands to encourage designers and architects alike to collaborate with them and create bespoke pieces to their liking.

Kevin Kolanowski belongs to Chicago originally. He always had an innovative streak that made him go opposite to a traditional path. Kevin initially made his way out to California in 1985 – thinking “the west coast was a little more avant-garde”. He initially started his career as an interior designer and eventually transitioned to lighting manufacturing.
SR got in touch with the shining man and found out the inspiration behind and his 2020 collection:
SR: What is the inspiration behind Fuse lighting? How it is different from the traditional and modern lighting fixtures?
Kevin Kolanowski: As most designers, you never really know when or where inspiration will hit. Mine comes from the smallest of things like the seed pod from an acacia tree to the simplest thing like the detail on a car, even from a piece of jewelry.
SR: Tell us about one design that is close to your heart?
Kevin Kolanowski: The one-piece that I designed that really speaks to me has always been my London Chandelier. The glass shades remind me of blocks of ice and when it's lit it just sparkles.

SR: How do you summerise the last 20 years of working with lights? What are the changes have you perceived in the industry in all these years?
Kevin Kolanowski: Only one word - FLOW. I always look at my line as one single flow, ever-changing with the wind. As far as changes? Technology has changed the way we design lighting now. Fixtures can be smaller with the driving force of LED, this opens up design to so much more freedom.

SR: Tell us about the 2020 collection.
Kevin Kolanowski: Twenty for Twenty was the thought. Pushing myself to design twenty pieces was quite a challenge, but looking at this year's collection, I feel that again it's flowing into what I call the future.
