LEED platinum rated UAE pavilion by Ar Santiago Calatrava uses local materials

Renowned architect Santiago Calatrava has recently completed the UAE Pavilion at the Dubai World Expo 2020. Sitting at the heart of the nearly 500-acre exhibition area, the design of the pavilion is inspired by a falcon in flight. The 161,000-sf pavilion will have exhibition areas, lounges, food and drink outlets, and an auditorium. Calatrava won this competition a seven month design competition with submissions from the world’s leading architecture firms where selection was made by the National Media Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

"Our intention from the start is to create a pavilion with minimal environmental impact and one that is rooted in nature, as most of our projects follow this ethos of providing our building with an ecological profile to suit the local climate."- Ar Santiago Calatrava

Sharing the experience of designing the new pavilion, on the firm’s official LinkedIn handle, Ar Santiago Calatrava said,” With most of the building materials fabricated locally, particularly the composite roofing material, the UAE Pavilion has been designed to meet LEED Platinum sustainable building standards. Our intention from the start is to create a pavilion with minimal environmental impact and one that is rooted in nature, as most of our projects follow this ethos of providing our building with an ecological profile to suit the local climate.”

One of the world's most renowned architecture firm Calatrava International LLC opened its Dubai office in 2016 headed by Micael Calatrava. The firm’s other notable projects in the country is Dubai Creek Tower, the upcoming tallest tower in the world, at Dubai Creek Harbour.
