art[LAB]’s Parametric Bench Treats Seating as Sculpture | MATECIA X WADE AISA

art[LAB] is the art and installation vertical of rat[LAB], exploring the intersection of contemporary art, spatial design, advanced fabrication and material experimentation. Its practice spans collectible artworks, sculptural furniture, parametric installations, suspended compositions, feature walls, kinetic works and large-scale site-responsive interventions for residences, hospitality spaces, workplaces, public environments, and cultural settings. One recent piece captures this philosophy in physical form is a parametrically designed bench that treats seating as sculpture. Know more about it on SURFACES REPORTER (SR).

The Parametric Bench

  • Developed through computational design principles, this bench is as much an art object as it is a functional piece of furniture.
  • Computationally developed, layered ribbed geometry creates a fluid, sculptural form through repetition and incremental variation
  • Crafted in pinewood, its precision-fabricated ribs bring natural grain, warmth and a tactile finish to the overall material character.
  • A handcrafted brass tree rises from the bench’s centre, symbolising growth, permanence and the dialogue between nature and computation
  • The bench blurs the line between furniture and art, and is suited to residential, hospitality, commercial and gallery settings alike.
  • Available in bespoke dimensions, timber variations, finishes and metal options to suit specific design requirements.
