Tales of Kaarigari Handcrafts Lighting Built on Architectural Discipline | MATECIA X WADE ASIA

Architects and interior designers Ashima Jain and Kanika Sanon don’t just design spaces, they design the light that brings those spaces alive. Trained to think in proportion, shadow and scale, the duo turned that same discipline toward a piece most interiors treat as an afterthought: light. Tales of Kaarigari began with a simple conviction that every space deserves a light drawn specifically for it, not chosen off a catalogue shelf. Know more about it on SURFACES REPORTER (SR).

USP:

  • Every piece to come out of the studio is worked entirely by hand, using techniques that resist machinery and were never meant to imitate it.
  • Working in thread and by hand, alongside the artisans whose craftsmanship gives each piece its character, thus making no two pieces ever identical.

The Sculptural Floor Lamp

  • Designed to exist as art before it becomes light, this sculptural floor lamp brings together the studio’s signature hand-craft philosophy in a single, striking silhouette.
  • Its graceful form softly illuminates a room while lending it a quiet, architectural presence; the kind of piece that anchors a space rather than simply lighting it.
  • Hand-wrapped threads bring depth, rhythm and tactile character to the form, while signature beaded detailing adds intricacy and a distinct handcrafted identity to the lamp.
  • Fully customisable to complement the scale, tone and character of any space.

Orb-The Mystical Desk Lamp

  • Orb is crafted with care, wrapped thread by thread to bring out the beauty in every detail.
  • Its gentle curves and warm glow create a sense of calm, perfect for your work desk, bedside, or that quiet corner you love.

Bunai-Pendant Lights

  • Bunai is a handcrafted pendant light made using layered C-shaped and elongated C-shaped forms.
  • The open composition creates a soft play of light and shadow, while the combination of blue, green and coral threads adds colour and texture to the piece.
  • Each Bunai pendant light is made by hand, from shaping the frame to wrapping and arranging the threads.
  • The individual forms can also be layered in different orientations, allowing the pendant to be arranged in different ways and giving each piece its own character.

About the studio

Based in New Delhi, Tales of Kaarigari creates handcrafted lighting for interiors demanding more than illumination. Each piece is entirely hand-worked, treating craft as structure, where making determines form, and form shapes shadow. Collections span Thread Raga, Light Anchors, Light Lines and Layered Looms, from desk lamps to sculptural pendants for double-height spaces. The work lives in homes, restaurants and hotels seeking texture without noise.

About the designer

Architects and interior designers Ashima Jain and Kanika Sanon design more than spaces. They design the light that brings them alive. Trained in proportion, shadow and scale, they turned their expertise toward lighting by founding Tales of Kaarigari which is about creating pieces that feel intentional - both in how they’re made and how they’re meant to be lived with.. Working in thread and by hand alongside skilled artisans, they craft pieces with genuine form and warmth.
