This Award-Winning Bengaluru Campus by Eller + Eller Architekten Will Feature Seven Buildings Connected Through Skywalks and Sky Gardens

Eller + Eller Architekten won an international design competition to create the Siemens Healthineers Campus in the new “Silicon Valley ''- Bengaluru. Siemens Healthineers- The global leader in medical technology for diagnostics and therapy encourages to get its “Innovation Hub” in this city owing to the innovative and emerging business climate in Bengaluru. It will be a research and development (R&D) and manufacturing hub for medical technology solutions for emerging markets. Further, the new complex is said to be the largest of all global sites of the Germany-based company and will be the largest investment in India to date. The project features seven buildings, all varying in height and clustered around a landscaped courtyard, are connected on several levels via terrace-like skywalks and sky gardens. The new campus is slated to be finished by 2025. The firm has shared more details about the project with SURFACES REPORTER (SR). Take a look:

The main theme of the campus is to enhance connectivity, collaboration, communication, and transparency. Technological innovation is not only generated in the spatially clearly defined functional areas tailored to concentrated work, as research and development but also through the casual encounter with other people, the informal exchange of ideas and opinions, the interdisciplinary impulse.

The human encounter and the diversified circulation and strolling on campus is given a new dimension in the architectural landscape designed by Eller + Eller together with Arup and Rainer Schmidt landscape architects, providing an inspiring stage.

A Forecourt

On the entrance side, the campus opens up to the street with a forecourt. From here, visitors and employees reach the individual functional areas of the campus via the foyer and the 'boulevards'.

Attractive Meeting And Communication Zones 

The various buildings are playfully positioned on the campus. The geometry reaches out to the surrounding landscape, creating intermediate zones and communicative circulation areas that allow especially to the moving spectator -diversified insights and outlooks. Further, it allows the employees to meet and communicate with the fellows.

Second Level 

From the spacious foyer of the main entrance hall, one is guided via a wide-open flight of stairs into the second level of the base building. From there, a boulevard-like path connects all work areas with the laboratories.

Research and Development (R&D) Area

In the work areas for research and development, too, transparency and a visually perceivable infrastructure are central planning principles. The volumes with laboratories and offices are each organized around a central atrium.

Campus Plaza- The Heart of the Complex 

The main plaza with its high sojourn quality is located in the center of the complex, closely interwoven with an intensely leafy outdoor space. It is the open-air lounge with trees and lots of greenery, as a marketplace for people to meet.

The movement on the campus permanently enables new perspectives, insights, and outlooks and invites to discover and broadens the horizon.

Compact Design With Future Expansion Possibility

Notwithstanding the high transparency and openness of the loosely interspersed structures, the building complex is kept compact and yet allows for quick shortcuts if needed.

If additional area would be required in the future, the structure already provides for an expansion of the campus with additional buildings to be docked on.

Sustainable Attributes

Siemens Healthineers‘ goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by their emissions by 2030 receives extensive attention in the campus‘ differentiated sustainability concept. The project takes maximum advantage of Bangalore‘s climate by proposing a campus layout and building design that maximizes the use of natural ventilation and natural daylight while reducing exposure to excessive solar radiation.

The large potential for solar energy generation is effectively exploited through the integration of semi-transparent photovoltaics on the atrium canopies and roof-integrated photovoltaics.

Siemens-Healthineers-Campus-Eller-Eller-Architects-Surfaces-Reporter (1)Large open spaces with intensive greening and water retention areas are designed to create a mild local microclimate that is comfortable for users, reduces air temperature and energy demand for cooling, and is naturally resistant to heavy rainfall.

Mixed Air Ventilation System

The office buildings are operated with a mixed ventilation system that utilizes natural ventilation when needed. For this purpose, the atriums are equipped with canopies that create a ‘Venturi effect’, enhancing a natural stack effect within the atriums.
