Henning Larsens New School in Sundby

Nestled in the lush greenery and the winding hills of Denmark's South Zealand region, Henning Larsen's New School in Sundby is a historic project that will contribute to the nation's sustainable and educational-facility architecture. The firm has started the construction work of the school, which is Denmark's first to be bestowed with the Nordic Ecolabel- the country's official sustainability certification as per a range of factors such as chemical exposure, indoor climate, sustainable material use, energy consumption, etc. The project is not only famous for its high sustainability parameters but also its potential for local community engagement and learning. The New School will welcome more than 580 students at the end of summer 2022 in nature-orientated surroundings. Read more about the project below at SURFACES REPORTER (SR):

UN World Language School

The striking feature of the school is that it adheres to the UN World Language School requirements for teaching facilities that fulfill the UN Sustainable Development goals through both its sustainable structural design and a teaching curriculum that accords with the United Nations' environmental efforts.

The firm gave precise attention to spaces outside the conventional learning process along with designing robust classroom spaces. The firm incorporated nature into the school's curriculum by merging the school with its surrounding environment. Eva Ravnborg, Partner at Henning Larsen said, "We have designed a school that works in a field between learning and landscape, and where it is not just about the learning that takes place in the building, but the whole route to and from the school and the way the school will connect to the local community."

Sustainable Design

The ecolabel school features a living roof that slants into the grassland at its bottom, ascending into a half-circle that places itself just above the land. Geometric windows and modules give a progressive touch to the sustainable design that creates a poise between the feasible and austere assimilation of nature.

The school, once constructed, will become a global example for advanced teaching environments. The school is scheduled to open by the end of summer 2022 for around 580 students up to grade 9.
