A fanatic traveler, movie buff and an art lover, Gargi Kulkarni Pherwani obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the Pune University in 2014. Straight after College her sensitivity towards design led her to work with the top production houses in the Bollywood film industry, Mumbai. Production houses such as Yash Raj films, Dharma Productions, Phantom Films, Nirvana films advertising to name a few molded her into understanding the direct relation Architecture had with the Visual and emotional narrative of the industry . A Cultural committee head and stage designer right from her college days , Gargi could transcend this at a professional level where she worked as a production designer and Set stylist for a number commercials as well as well know Bollywood movies.
Being mentored by renounced production designers as well as DOP’s from the industry helped her form a vocabulary and an appetite for design at a bordered level. This experience plays a big part in her approach towards any assignments. A mix of her technical expertise as an Architect, and her individual aesthetic strengths made carve out a niche for herself in the industry.
Currently Gargi is the Principal Architect and Partner at Studio GASP, Pune which she co-founded with her partner Sahil Pherwani. The Studio takes up Interior and Architecture works along with production design where a holistic approach toward rational design takes the center stage in all the projects be it a movie set, temporary installation, art work or a campus master plan. The studio believes in creating “timeless spaces” which retain a character of their own, induce character, happiness & peace in the lives of the users. The Studio believes that architecture emerges from a sensitive understanding of the context, one where the evolution of design is firmly rooted in the narrative, while interpreting the elements as a contemporary expression. GASP has understood that the beauty lies in detailing and it is constant effort that resolving the most intricate details brings beauty to the finished product.
They believe that design is about more than meeting people’s needs—it is the art of realizing their aspirations and changing the way they experience the world. The best results come from a balance of disciplines: planning, interiors, engineering, and architecture. This total design approach means seamless coordination, from the dynamic initial design stages to the pride in seeing users inspired by the end result. In recent years Gargi has led the Studio to be recognized through various regional and national forums, competitions and publications.
