Warka an unusual design solution to drinking water, Jarahieh School that provides educational facilities for children from 300 Syrian refugee families, a low-cost Micro library to help fight Indonesia’s low literacy rates, are a few of the projects that were culled from 100 of projects nominated for the Aga Khan Award, announced in Kazan, Russia, for Architecture 2019.
Inaugurated by His Excellency Rustam Minnikhanov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan, the exhibition on the Aga Khan Award has shortlisted 20 projects in total. All these projects have been located in 16 different countries and will compete for a prize of US$ 1 million. The winners will be announced in the fall.
Aga Khan Award is presented every three years to recognize architectural projects that set new standards and address the aspirations and needs of Muslim communities. All the projects selected for the award had to be completed between the first day of 2012 and the last day of 2017. They should also be in use for as a minimum a year.
There are nine members in the Master Jury: Elizabeth Diller, a founding partner of a design studio, Meisa Batayneh, founder and principal architect of maisam architects & engineers, Nondita Correa Mehrotra, Director of the Charles Correa Foundation, Kareem Ibrahim, an Egyptian architect and urban researcher, Mona Fawaz, a Professor in Urban Studies and Planning at the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy at the American University of Beirut, Edhem Eldem, a Professor of History at Bogazici University (Istanbul), Ali M. Malkawi, founding director of the Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities, Sir David Chipperfield, David Chipperfield Architects and Anthony Kwame´ Appiah, an Anglo-Ghanaian American philosopher.
