23 years ago, a curious and creative young man started a new path having no idea where it was leading. He did it without fear, with courage and a great work capacity. Today Arturo Álvarez is an internationally renowned designer, who has received important awards which distinguish him as one of the best Spanish designers of his time. He has a unique style of working with a strong and recognizable character. Arturo loves to develop his own materials. With the pieces Conversas, Agora and Encontros, which he had presented at the Salone del Mobile-Euroluce, he intends to reflect about the subjects that worry him.
Here are the wonderful lights from the designer:
Encontros is a group of anthropomorphic slender and impressive figures that seem like talking with others from their own perspectives. They observe us, they look at each other —from great heights or closer ones
The sculptural range by Arturo Alvarez shows the individual confronting himself and his intricate relationship with the environment. The series represents the person escaping in the shape of shiny light beams, and disappears in the places where darkness prevails. It leaves several questions in the air. It also shows how the contemporary human being emerges with strength.
Displayed in the group, they give a feeling of mutual isolation. The pieces are hung with threads in a pendant composition. The installation becomes disquieting as it forces us to think about this “threads” hidden in the shadows, that we knit all around us, and that others are knitting too.
Conversas is an uncovered and open faces collection, with all their noticeable beauties and despairs and which get all of their dramatic appearance from the light that projects them onto the wall in 3D. When the lights move, the faces engage into silent and frightening confabulations among each other, which make us reflect on human beings, personal interrelation and how communications fluctuate with others.
About the Designer
Arturo Álvarez is an internationally renowned designer, who has received important awards which distinguish him as one of the best Spanish designers of his time. When Arturo Alvarez started to design his first lighting, he created a new style within the Tiffany lamps which revolutionized the market and fostered his quick rise, making a name for himself in the world of design. At that time, an elderly man who had the chance to see his first lighting, predicted: “these are the kind of pieces that will be sought by collectors in 100 years.”
